I've now checked all the ffmpeg & libav packages against those on the PC on which sound works. They all match and I've done all the reinstalls again but still sound doesn't play for vlc on mp3 files. I can't think of anything to do next. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu as that's a big job in terms of reconfiguration etc. I'm now using banshee to play music & videos. But it's a slight nuisance in that when I quit banshee, it carries on playing until I stop it in System Monitor. RhythmBox has the same problem.
