I was able to to reproduce a similar issue by trying to use ListFilesInGuest in /tmp. We found that the issue can be fixed by commenting out the option PrivateTmp=yes under [Services] in /lib/systemd/system/open-vm-tools.service and the commands # systemctl daemon-reload # systemctl restart open-vm-tools
