I removed Ubuntu from the laptop and tried out Fedora 8 Test 3. Since
Fedora 8 is very close to release after updating it is more or less what
it will be like when its released at this point. Under Fedora:

Sound does work out of the box if booted with acpi=off
Sound does not work if booted with acpi_osi=!Linux with or without a fixed DSDT
Sound does not work if booted normally with or without a fixed DSDT.

Fedora 8 is using kernel 2.6.23 and ALSA 1.0.15

I'll check to see if there are any bugs filed with Fedora about this
