One of the reasons that the divx plugin doesn't work could be also that the plugin writes the value: enable-dvx=0 in the ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf file. (it suddenly did that on my pc and it took me a while to figure it out because no option was shown in the config dialog for enable/disable Divx)
BTW maybe it is good to place the value 1 in the systemwide conf file.
