Packaging 1.4 sounds great :). You don't need to do anything for Valgrind support in 1.4.
Nobody had considered that libvmmalloc.so would not be available. Our tests use libvmalloc.so (that's how I found this issue - https://github.com/pmem/pmdk/pull/2873) and today I found out that even our libvmmalloc man page tells you to use libvmmalloc.so.
