Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity
When Installing 7.10 from the desktop iso on a clean (new) XP machine, I end up consistently with a grub error 17. /boot/grub seems not to be present. I have tried this and had the error occur on both a single new 320GB seagate ATI drive and a 20GB master/320GB slave set up. Both times the Windows XP was a new install. The computer is an older dell optiplex. I have tried various options for recovering from the error or installing without tripping it. To recover I have run fdisk -lu to check the partition numbers, and the various bits of advice in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3658886, but it doesn't seem relevant. I have not tried installing from the alternate disk or tried installing 7.04 (which has always worked for me). I also tried most options on the grub superdisk. The second time I tried installing 7.10, fdisk showed that the linux partition had been set to boot (rather than the ntfs). I changed that using gparted but to no avail. I am not sure if the problem is that the installer is wrecking the XP MBR, or if it is that it is not installing grub. I have somebody looking at the windows MBR to see if that's wrecked. I know it is not installing grub. This seems to me to be a pretty significant error. I know my research assistant's interest in Linux just died during this period. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ubiquity causes MBR problems; fails to install grub https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
