I'm seeing this issue on the latest up-to-date Ubuntu 18.04 as of May
4th, 2018:

One thing I noticed, is that it isn't consistent on which font it fails. It 
seems to be related to different mirrors and depending on which mirror is 
chosen it succeeds for fails. I'm thinking that the built-in list of mirrors in 
the package has a bunch of obsolete failing mirrors perhaps?
