Its definitely a problem with partition layout caused by OS X. I booted
knoppix, removed all partitions made by OS X, added in some new ones
(two primary, one 0.5 GB, the other 30 GB), rebooted - put the Ubuntu
7.10 CD in the drive and booted.

Gparted and the Ubuntu installer now sees the harddrive and I can
partition and install etc.

'm not sure if this problem exists with Tiger as I've only tried to
install both OS X *and* Ubuntu after I installed Leopard.
