There are some edge cases when the user's disk is partitioned to boot in bios mode, but the EFI mode installer doesn't detect it.
There is supposed to be a warning message about this combination but it does not always show up -- as evidenced by this thread. For these users, there is NO indication that something is wrong until the very end, when 'apt-install grub-efi-amd64-signed' fails, but by then it is too late. Many people have lost data because of this bug. Is there an existing bug report for "EFI mode installer doesn't always detect when booted in BIOS mode"? If so then maybe this bug can be marked as a duplicate of that one.
