Public bug reported:

my laptop: HP Compaq nx9420
grafic card: [AMD/ATI] RV530/M56-P [Mobility Radeon X1600]
system: UBUNTU 16.04 LTS

1. I boot into textmode (multi-user.target) with the boot-option
"radeon.modeset=0"
    so the radeon kernel-driver is disabled.
2. the login appears as usual and I can login. Text-screen is o.k.
3. as soon as I load the radeon kernel-moduel (modprobe -v radeon modeset=1)
    the screen (still in textmode) starts flickering and is unreadable.
    the radeon module is:
/lib/modules/4.10.0-42-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon.ko

the same flickering happens when when I use boot-option "radeon.modeset=1"
and when booting into graphical.target.

I tried some recommended work-arounds, e.g.
  /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf; set Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
but without success

Any idea how to use the radeon-driver with a Mobility Radeon X1600 and
UBUNTU 16.04?

B.t.w.: when using KNOPPIX V7.2 I have no problem with the grafic-card

some more tests with differnt systems:
- Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS; kernel: 3.13.0-147-generic -> screen is o.k.;
- Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS; but: kernel: 4.2.0-42-generic -> screen flickers
(unusable!)
- Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS; but: kernel: 4.4.0 -> screen flickers
- Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS -> screen flickers
- SO: the problem seems to start with Ubuntu kernel-versions >= 4.2.0 .... and
the included radeon.ko kernel-driver
