Some more info. 1. When I was installing Ubuntu above, I specified /boot partition and home dir encryption, among other things.
I retried the installation process without /boot partition and without encryption - installation completed successfully. 2. Also, my PC is all-UEFI (without Legacy BIOS boot Setup option) - Acer Aspire model ES1-432. Ubuntu installed some files to the EFI fat partition, but they have no effect - GRUB does not show up on boot.
