Same error, happened to me while updating software, which included the kernel update 4.15.0-24. I had (and have till I reboot) version 4.13.0-45.
I had a similar issue a while ago, also related to updating the kernel, which rendered the Nvidia driver unusable for a few days until the driver was updated for the new kernel version (bug link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers-340/+bug/1741671).
