I applied that workaround, but no crash files have appeared in /var/crash. To be clear, this bug pertains to hibernate resume only. The screen simply blanks out. What happens is also that I can slowly, glacially interact with the keyboard's Num and Scroll lock toggles (leds). However, I'm not able to go into a virtual terminal or affect the display at all.
This all works perfectly in lightdm. I'm not sure what gdm3 is doing that is causing this freeze/or strange behaviour.
