I'm still having the same issue, even with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9 on gutsy. The only line of debugging output I get from blender is "intelWaitIrq: drmI830IrqWait: -16" - I'm not sure if this is relevant. I have an Intel GMA X3100.
