Here is a copy of a working /boot/grub/grub.cfg file that fixed a problem. When using QEMU, apply some of this config to broken one (UUIDs will not be the same for you!!) and then when grub menu appears press enter on Ubuntu option to enter non broken machine. If you let grub timeout play out and don't press enter then system will be corrupted.
