Oddly, my tests now seem to indicate the problem is Ubuntu, not Edubuntu. I was able to install Kubuntu and Edubuntu together, both on single partions (only a separate /tmp partition). Oooh. /tmp shows some buffered areas like "Tracker-xeno". I wonder if that is related. I'll try that next.
