Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a new problem after the Gutsy upgrade, but I'm
certainly noticing it more now. The fan will start and run for just a
few seconds, and then stop. This continues for a while, though the
periods when it is on seem to get longer and longer.

My concern is that the starting and stopping of the fan is supposed to
be the main cause of wear on the fan bearings, and I just recently lost
a notebook computer because of fan failure. Was that accelerated by my
use of Ubuntu? This machine is a Sharp PC-WA70L, a new machine that I've
had for only one year, though I only put Ubuntu on it a few months ago.

More subjective, but I also feel like the fan is noisier now than it
used to be.

Anyway, it seems like there should be a sanity check there. If the ran
has only been running for a few seconds, it should keep on running for a
while. Another possibility is that the machine has a variable speed fan
and Ubuntu is not using it properly. (More stuff I don't know how to
check.)

Since the Gutsy upgrade has given me so much trouble I have started
using Windows more again, so I will try to pay attention to the behavior
over there. However, I know that Ubuntu is not supposed to be driving me
to Windows--I really do hate Microsoft and regard that company as an
enemy of choice and freedom.
