Public bug reported:

I can only install ubuntu 7.04 or 7.1 with the alternate CD. The
standard disk just gives me a screen that has all of the pixels shifted
randomly and freezes. This happens with both the 32 and 64 bit versions
of both releases. If I install with the text based CD I get it installed
and it boots to the login screen perfectly fine but does the same
graphical glitch when it tries to load the desktop. It will load in safe
graphics mode and I can do things from the command line. For pictures:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=595408 I also haven't had any
luck installing Nvidia drivers from the command line.

my system:
Asus p5nsli
Intel Core2 duo 64 bit
2GB ram
2 SATA and 1 IDE HD (installing to one of the SATAs)
NVidia 7800GT by evga
