Greetings: thanks for your prompt reply! I'm a Win10 newbie as well as Linux. Solved problem by disabling Secure Boot, enabling Legacy Boot, turning off Digital Signature Validation, then booting and installing from a Linux Format DVD of Ubuntu 18.04 (having changed the boot order as well, of course). Now enjoying the "Bionic Beaver" and returning to Linux Foundation intro course on edX... MJC
