Compiz doesn't work with nvidia driver? Where is this documented? I never had a problem with Beryl. If this is indeed the case, than there should be more specific messages, with a reason for the cause of failure, in ubuntu when a user tries to enable effects. The generic "desktop effects could not be enabled" lead me to believe that it was a bug as I assumed my card/driver was ok.
