I managed to create successful compressed dumps with trusty makedumpfile Version: 1.5.5-2ubuntu1.6, with both a linux-3.13.0-137 and a linux-3.13.0-85. That was on an amd64 kvm system.
So, this tells me this is system dependent, and we need more information on its configuration, and all the help and data we can gather to debug this, as it's likely we won't be able to easily reproduce it.
