The `gnome-shell --replace' workaround seems to fix this bug for me.
However, this causes a new bug when I lock the laptop. After locking I
cannot enter my password and it is as if someone is holding down the
enter key and the words 'Authentication Error' flashes up.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 17 and Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS. The Gnome version
is GNOME Shell 3.28.2.
