EricDHH,

The issue you describe isn't specifically related to Firefox. Holding
any package in synaptic will not stop an upgrade using apt or
unattended-upgrades. I believe the opposite also to be true, holding a
package with apt-mark won't stop synaptic upgrading it.

I'd like to close your bug report by marking it as a duplicate of bug
1766161 which although reported later has been worked on by the Bug
Squad, the importance has been set and of course is already assigned to
the correct package.

Do you agree that the other bug adequately describes the problem that
you came across with Firefox 56/57?
