On Gutsy the "tpd" package cannot be installed due to the fact that it conflicts with "hotkey-setup" which in turn is required by "ubuntu- desktop". I don't doubt tpb works since, if I remember correctly, that was the package that enabled the buttons on past versions of ubuntu. Now we have hotkey-setup, which doesn't work for some laptops it seems.
