Additonal comment: S/PDIF out is *always connected*, so there is a red light coming out of the combo headphones + S/PDIF jack (it is a 2 in 1 combo connection according to the user manual of the laptop).
If I remember correctly, the patch that solved this issue in Ubuntu 16.04 turned the S/PDIF out off, as I could not see any red light coming out after applying the fix.
