I used Y-PPA-Manager to purge all the PPAs. This is a GUI tool.

The Y-PPA-Manager tool can be easily installed using the “WebUpd8” team
PPA as shown.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install y-ppa-manager

After successfully installing y-ppa-manager, i launch it from the
terminal as follow.

$ y-ppa-manager

I also purged the PPA of the Y-PPA-Manager ofcourse. After doing this,
the upgrade went smoothly.

Maybe it is an idea to create an update for 16.04 where this is
automatically done in the upgrade? (and with a notification)
