Hello James, Judging by "FreeCAD 17 Beta", it sounds like you're using the FreeCAD snap, which was uploaded by a community member and then abandoned; it's from June 2016 and FreeCAD 0.17 was actually released April 6th, 2018. *I don't recommend using it at all*.
I filed a name dispute for the snap on October 28th, 2018 so the community could regain control of the official 'freecad' snap, but I never heard anything back. Checking my snapcraft.io login, it looks like I now control the 'freecad' name and was never notified of the outcome of the dispute, but I don't expect I'll have time to work on snap terribly soon, since we're preparing for a 0.18 release. In the meantime, I suggest either using the FreeCAD Stable PPA (https://launchpad.net/~freecad-maintainers/+archive/ubuntu/freecad- stable) or grabbing one of the Appimages from our Github page (https://github.com/freecad/freecad/releases).
