With Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) I'm having some success.
NOTE: I have made no changes to the kernel at all.
I can successfully see all my devices.
In addition I have added a Cannon lpb5000 printer and and Epson perfection 3200 
scanner, which are working correctly.

But.... I'm having minor problems with flash drives....
My USB flash drive will hang occasionally, and then reset. Transfers occur 
successfully, but slowly.
Doing the following in the root terminal cures the problem:
         echo -1 > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
This is the suggested work-around for bug #85488, so I'll be adding further 
detatils there.
If anyone wants my current lsusb, lspci info, the will (soon) find that info in 
bug #85488.
