So I found out the problem was usplash, which is installed with /etc/usplash.conf that lacks any resolution setting - once I put there 1024x768 setting, it works perfectly, and even got me back control over lcd brightness which was lost since gutsy. I do believe it is a serious problem that the file is installed incorrectly configured, and that usplash reacts so badly in that situation (even though according to changelog this was supposed to be taken care of).
