alright, i shortly tested another window manager (xfce) yesterday evening. it seemed to work alright, at least it didn't freeze after one hour. however, i did not turn on desktop effects on this manager (stupid question: is xfce supporting compiz effects?)
after one hour i switched back to gnome... -- Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU.
