I have an ATI Radeon X600 using the open source radeon driver. I updated from Feisty, but in the upgrade changed from Compiz-Fusion repositories to the official Ubuntu packages. I have experienced the freezes described above, especially when doing something window management related, like putting a window to back (with middle mouse button).
After I *switched off the animations plugin*, I haven't had any freezes. This is going on a couple of days now without any problems. (And I can really do without the animations plugin anyway...)
