Contacted Tom, hope he confirms. As I own similar hardware (AMD-based DELL notebook of the same architecture, Inspiron 1501), still running ubuntu fine (up to 18.10 now) with the above mentioned workaround. Actually similar bug raised by me is closed on redhat side https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=454131 . As the hardware is quite old (more than 12 years old!) no-one will bother to reproduce or fix it, hence the only way forward is just to close it.
