Thanks to Alberto I can confirm the nvidia-384 (nvidia-graphics- drivers-384 - 384.130-0ubuntu0.16.04.2~ppa1 ) from the nvidia-driver- staging ppa works on the customer image.
But we still have other dkms modules that still cannot be built properly.
