the missing desktop links are caused by the fact that KDE doesnt monitor the contents of /media/. In gnome gnomevfs uses inotify to watch its contents, it then just triggers the gnome mechanisms to add new devices. https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ltspfs-virtual-hal-devices adresses that fact in a more desktop agnostic way. its sadly requiring some time to do the implementation. i started some ground work some time ago (http://people.ubuntu.com/~ogra/ltspfs-hal-root.png) but my to work on it time is very limited so it will likely still take a while.
