Rereading what I just wrote, I realise that my original report was for Gnumeric 1.7.0. Maybe I had written an incorrect version number when I originally reported the problem? Anyway, you can test the problem yourself with any Gnumeric version by just loading the spreadsheet demonstrating the problem.
