I also noticed this, my laptop's integrated Intel audio device is also
missing from pulseaudio(both as input and output), but I can see other
HDMI or USB sound devices I may have attached and I can switch to them
and they work as expected.

Interestingly the device works when playing a WAV file using aplay, but
only if I run aplay as root. As a normal user I can just see it in
alsamixer and I can play with the volume and mute controls there.

Here's the error I get when using aplay as my ordinary user:
$  aplay test.wav 
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1071:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
aplay: main:828: audio open error: Permission denied
