I have the same problem with kopete 0.12.7 and kubuntu 7.10 gutsy i386. It seems that this bug appeared several months ago. It's reported also in the kde bug tracking system: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=136549 but all the people who reported the bug there were using the ubuntu package, so it's likely that the problem is inside the package
