Note that the PPA doesn't actually have a disco build, so you are using
the cosmic one on a disco system. I'm not sure if this could cause
problems if it is trying to use things that aren't there (?), it might
be totally fine.

Also note that 1.3.X is a pre-release series so is moving at a faster
pace than 1.2.X and might have bugs.

I have tried installing flatpak (from the archive) on a fresh Ubuntu
19.04 VM with my font set to Roboto 11 and calculator works.

So it could be an issue with using a cosmic build from the PPA, it could
be an issue with 1.3.X, or maybe something needs to purge/refresh old
font caches or something when an upgrade is performed.

I think the best thing is probably to discuss this upstream as they are
more likely to know the cause, and then report an Ubuntu bug if
relevant. So I'd suggest opening a bug here
