I don`t use gam?server at all. it is just installed by default to make some trouble to users and bunc of applications depend on it I think.
Anyway, I am killing thunar and gam_server few times a day but I am still using My Xubuntu with joy. There are other file managers like Krusader that you can use in meantime. ad you can also use One window of thunar.
