In isolation I don't think it's correct to say that Wayland sessions have "no external monitors". Wayland sessions do work with external monitors on the Nvidia driver if you have nvidia-drm.modeset=1. I've confirmed this on a desktop at least.
It sounds like you're describing some other laptop-specific or Optimus- specific bug.
