I had a similar problem
Macbook 1st gen
Gutsy
Compiz + Emerald
Big Bug:
I was experimenting with gDesklets and Compiz Fusion, trying to put the
widgets on the widget layer by experimenting with the widget windows
text field in compiz settings. Somehow (I don't know how) the field came
to be occupied by a text that was similar to this:

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
This caused my system to become totally useless once GNOME loaded and
activated compiz. All input was useless, I couldn't even change virtual
terminals. No good!
