The computer this problem occurred on became increasingly unstable. After investigation I discovered a failing RAM DIMM stick (thanks to the "memtest" program that's available at the boot menu of all Ubuntu Live CDs).
I believe the problem reported in this bug was associated with this failing hardware. I have not experienced this problem since hardware repair. My recommendation is for this bug to be set aside as INVALID.
