a few weeks ago I have been able to build dkms nividia 340 kernel module for mainline build 5.1.16. Install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.107 with kernel 5.0 and 5.1 patches from https://pkgs.rpmfusion.org/cgit/nonfree/nvidia-340xx-kmod.git/log/ (I had to fix one of the patches myself) with ubuntu's mainline kernel 5.1.16. I also had to extract the *custom.run to disable compiling of uvm (dkms.conf and Makefile).
