I used to have the freeze when gnome-screensaver was running (not only after suspend). I thought it was a problem with gnome-screensaver or xserver-xorg-video-intel (reported as Bug #160309). This morning I updated compiz, and now the system freezes each time it is idle for a few minutes (independently of the screensaver). I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 with the intel driver.
