Upgrading to Gutsy from Feisty I found the uninstall of the earlier version failed because the pre-remove script failed, possibly because the earlier spamass-milter wasn't running in the first place, which in turn was probably because it was trying to establish a .pid file in /var/run/sendmail, a directory that didn't exist. I created a sendmail directory (as root) under /var/run, started spamass-milter (/etc/init.d /spamass-milter start), and tried again to upgrade spamass-milter. It worked.
Wish I'd figured that out before I blew away the kids PC to re-install from scratch after the upgrade from Dapper to Gutsy failed for the same reason.
