Public bug reported:

The default mixer settings do not correctly detect and merge the 2.1
system on the Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. This laptop comes with a ICH6
AC'97 audio controller and 2.1 speaker setup. Currently, the "highs"
are set for Master and the "lows" are set for Master Mono. In order to
get volume control and muting to work, I had to choose the inelegant
solution of setting the master volume channel to "PCM." This 2.1 setup
should be under one channel, "Master."
