I can sort of confirm this bug on amd64 - E6750 cpu on GA-P35-DS3 mobo with Gigabyte NVidia 8600GT. Tried a couple of VGA= options as well as different /etc/usplash.conf resolutions (from 800x600 to 1280x1024, max for my display), usually with VGA and usplash.conf synced to the same resolution. I'm saying 'sort of' because the system does not hang. After GRUB I just get blank screen, no signal, monitor shuts off, but the system is loading under that and X with gdm comes up. Without 'splash' kernel option everything of course works and I get normal boot messages.
