Do you have any evidence that Compiz increases power consumption?  All
the tests that I've seen (although I haven't seen many - «http://www
.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01776.html»
is one) suggest that the difference in power consumption between
Metacity & Compiz is extremely small (in that test, 0.1W unless
bluetooth or wifi were on, in which case there was no measurable
difference).

There may be particular compiz plugins which increase power consumption.
If we can locate these (powertop may be useful here), then we could
easily provide a system to selectively disable these plugins when on
battery.
