So far it seems a permanent workaround is to create a symlink to the noto color emoji files in the current user's ~/.fonts directory: $ shopt -s dotglob; mkdir -p ~/.fonts/truetype/noto; ln -s /usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto/* ~/.fonts/truetype/noto
