I am removing my bug #162400 as a duplicate of this one, because I don't use vga=xxx and I am affected by almost identical symptoms, except that modprobe of the different proposed modules did not help me. If you don't use vga=xxx in your /boot/grub/menu.lst on the kernel lines, then maybe you should mark your bug as a duplicate of mine (bug #162400) rather than this one.
